Final Part 2

I kind of did this as my last blog assignment last night, but here are the three things I like most about my newfound media literacy.

Like I said before, I really enjoyed learning how to use the Adobe programs.  I think that having the knowledge about using these programs will help me out greatly later in life.  Not only with the rest of my classes here at Marist, but when I get a job in the real world I believe that knowing how to use Adobe will be an asset.

The second thing I like about my newfound media literacy is that lately I have been taking second looks at advertisements and other media that surrounds me.  I have noticed that I think more about what the ads mean and how they effect our lives.  I believe that by doing this I will have more knowledge of the world around me.

The third thing that I really enjoyed learning about is similar to what I just said, however, I also liked learning how media effects OTHER people and their views on life.  I realized how much our society is affected but everyone has a different reaction and perspective.  This is why I enjoyed reading the blogs, because I could see what the other students in class thought of the media and its influences.

Reflection on Our Class

Overall I really enjoyed learning to use all of the Adobe programs.  That was probably my favorite part of class.  I always enjoyed coming in on Wednesdays to work on projects in these programs.  I think it benefited me greatly to learn how to use these programs, and I even began to use them in other classes throughout the semester.  Thank you for introducing me to these media programs!

Media Influences

With the end of the year papers and presentations the 8 other girls in my house have been going crazy! So we were discussing paper topics and two of the girls have papers to write on the topic of media in todays society.

One of them had to write about how cell phones are affecting today’s adolescents.  Cell phones are increasingly being used in business situations and at inappropriate times.  While this technology is great for increasing communication between people we today need to learn when it is not a good idea to use a cell phone.

Another one of my housemates wrote a paper on how Facebook is increasingly being used for advertisements.  The very popular application “bumper stickers” can be used to advertise any product, event, or idea.  Now companies, and even bars are making facebook accounts so students can friend them and get advertisements about specials.

I am beginning to feel that many classes are starting to focus on media influence in todays society because it is so important in todays world.

I opened up my internet browser and I have the home page set as aol.com.  I like to read the top stories that come up, yes, this is my only source  of news.  I know we discussed this in class one time about college students not paying attention to the news but i honestly never watch tv or see a newspaper on campus (besides The Circle).  So I get my news from aol.

Anyway, I saw this article come up and I was astonished.  Professional sports are suppose to be a fun and entertaining thing for the whole family, but people are starting to take it to a dangerous level.  What are we teaching our children today by having these violent rivalries?  I know that I do not want my children growing up in a world like this.  In addition I was embarrassed to be a Yankee fan when I read this article.

I figured that this is a good video to go along with the movie “Idiocracy” that we watched in class.  This video has almost 23 million views on youtube and I feel like it would be something that they would watch in the movie “Idiocracy.”  Is this the start of our world turning towards stupidity?  Probably not, at least I hope not, but when we watched the movie in class I thought of how popular this Charlie the Unicorn video was last year on youtube.

Everyone has seen the Abercrombie Ads with the models showing as much skin as possible.  What I wonder about this ad is that Abercrombie & Fitch is a clothing strore, however, there is not one piece of clothing in this ad!

We took this picture before our team banquet a few weeks ago.  We have taken pictures on the green before the banquet for the past 2 years because we think the scenery is beautiful.  That is the best part of Marist, that it is so pretty, and this picture could definitly be an advertisement for Marist!

With YouTube today anyone can become a star. Right now these two children, Harry and Charlie, have no idea that they are so famous just because Charlie bit his brother.  Imagine growing up and being able to say that your video has over 21 million views!

This piece of advertising shows one of the most influencing items of our society today, and that is money.  Everyone in the United States wants to get rich, and that is the idea that this ad is playing off of.  The docile body is not an actual body, but it is a thing, and quite an important thing to us today.  The ad states that this is your goal, that this is what everyone wants and this is the way to get it.

This Nike Ad can also be an example of docile bodies mainly because of the slogan, “Just Do It.”  The ad is trying to get everyone to conform and buy Nike by saying just do it.  Conformity is one of the main ideas to using docile bodies in advertisements.
